Ironworkers Memorial Bridge collapse 51st Anniversary

Today is the 51st Anniversary of the collapse of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge.

On 17 June 1958 the Second Narrows Bridge collapsed during construction, killing 18 ironworkers and injuring 79 other workers. A diver searching for bodies later died bringing the total number of fatalities to 19.

This remains the highest number of fatalties in any industrial accident in BC's history.

In memory of these workes, a commemoration of is being held 1.00pm at the south end of the bridge at the Memorial Cairn - follow Boundary Road North from Hastings Street to the end and turn left on Fellowes Street.
