Community job action in Duncan warning to Campbell and Bruce to stop attacks on health, education and rights

May 29, 2002

Vancouver, B.C.

Today's community-wide withdrawal of services in Duncan should serve as a warning to Premier Gordon Campbell he cannot roll back workers rights, health, education and public services with impunity says B.C. Federation of Labour President Jim Sinclair.

Sinclair was responding to news reports that picket lines in the Duncan area are affecting a wide range of local health services, municipal and provincial government offices, local businesses and schools.

"If Premier Campbell uses closure in the legislature to shut down debate on issues as fundamental as the eight-hour day and limits on overtime, he can expect working people to respond in kind," Sinclair said. "Labour Minister Graham Bruce should get in his car and get home to Duncan to hear how his government program is hurting his community.

"The Federation supports any form of peaceful democratic protest," Sinclair said. "I have no doubt more communities will take this kind of action as they fight to keep hospitals open, schools open and jobs in their community."

Sinclair was commenting from the legislature in Victoria where he is monitoring the forced passage of bills to rollback benefits to injured workers and to reduce employment standards for non-union workers.
